January 31st Work

Not too much to report - little over an hour only worked this weekend due to other committments.

Sissy bar removed after much swearing....drilled one side out but was able to leverage the other side ok using spanners.

Have also taken off the pillion grab rails - a little messy as the rear shocks sit on this frame mount as well. Some balancing, lifting & more swearing was required.

Rear mudguard has one very hard to reach nut so have held over removing that for the present. Also need to get the electrical map as I'll need to get the rear light disconnected when I do that....

Progress

weekend just passed, able to give the engine and frame a solid degrease so I have a new stain on the driveway but a cleaner looking bike. Positives to date - have removed the crash guard from the front of the bike giving a bit of a cleaner look. Should also help with work on the engine. also removed the seat and side panels exposing the airbox and rear guard. unfortunately the sissy bar bolts have completely sized and no amount of penetrating oil could get them to shift. i suspect that i'll need to drill these bolts out but a little concerned as i've not done that before and they are part of the frame. plenty of scope for making mistakes - excellent... removed the tax disc holder which had basically rusted away. unfortunately (again) one of the bolts for the mudguard is also buggered so more drilling before that comes away i suspect. found a lovely full tool set with kwaka badging which is nice.
i'll post some piccies of the work. engine looks a little better but cleaning has also shown that the bike has been on it's side at some point... next steps - get a manual, battery and try and get the old girl ticking over....fingers crossed and some sort of powerful motorcycle related deity willing....

For couchman - rossi tested ferrai F1 during the week and was 3/10's of the lap record. G.O.A.T. indeed.

The Start

It has begun.
Taken delivery of a Kawasaki W650 in terrible condition with the intention of turning it into a bobber. Engine hasn't run for about 2 years, rust has set in, battery is dead... on the plus side I have a limited budget, the engine has compression and there are plenty of good ideas on the web for inspiration. happy to accept hints on restoring, parts or details of suppliers you know of who are doing good things with W650's.
